KAYOD

For those who work hard, a place to slow down.

The story

Filipinos know a thing or two about hard work. We even have a saying for it: “kayod-kalabaw.”

But shouldn't the people who work the hardest also have somewhere to take a break?

That question inspired KAYOD, an award-winning park proposal designed to bring recreation, nature, and a little breathing room into the everyday lives of workers at the Freeport Area of Bataan.

The concept brings together two complementary spaces: an adaptive park featuring a multipurpose pavilion, amphitheater, landscaped gathering areas, and a retention pond; and a 700-meter linear park offering riverside walks, cycling paths, outdoor exercise areas, and spaces to relax.

Beyond recreation, the design embraces the environment through tree preservation, permeable paving, and planted bioswales that help manage rainwater naturally.

And as a tribute to the hardworking people behind the Freeport, sculptures inspired by the Philippine carabao are scattered throughout the landscape.

Awarded First Place in FAB's 2020 architectural design competition, KAYOD is a reminder that great public spaces aren't just about beautiful surroundings.

They're about giving people a better place to live, connect, and occasionally take a well-deserved break.
